This exercise we had to make different type of surface by using the method taught in class on Monday (drape, patch, control points, rebuild, etc.) The first set I tried only manipulate the surface by using control points on the edge of the surface (top). For the second set (middle) I decided to use rebuilt and manipulate the control points within the surface. Then I combined both methods and made the last series of surfaces.

(using patch made series of planar surfaces and then extruded them)

Herzog & de Meuron--Messe Basel New Hall

The designs are not primarily visually driven.
The generation of geometry and material configurations are performance driven.

The design concept comes from a simple idea – two boxes, one on top of the other, slightly twisted to produce a hyperbolic surface. The facade thus faces towards the street, or towards the sky.

CNC-milled components are assembled into a complex 3-D structure. This facade strategy has both double curvature and variably sized openings.

Digital fabrication machines such as cardboard cutters, laser cutters and CNC milling are used because the office believes that the physical model is vital to understanding architecture, to anticipating the construction of a building or component.
